Community Engagement Summary Update – Alice Saunders and Edward Byers/Loyal Orange
As part of Brightside’s redevelopment plan for 2924 Venables Street (Alice Saunders House) and 1425 & 1451 East 12th Avenue (Loyal Orange and Edward Byers), Brightside’s community engagement efforts are designed to give the community an opportunity to provide input on the preliminary plans before submitting a formal rezoning application.
Our thanks to everyone that participated in the community engagement process – participants included members of the community, local businesses and community groups, Brightside residents, and many others.
Feedback has proven to be notably positive, with the majority of respondents indicating strong support for increasing the number of affordable rental homes in the community.
- 100% of respondents agreed that increasing the number of below-market rental homes for seniors was important
- Over 94% of respondents agreed that affordable rental housing in both communities was a priority
- The majority of respondents that attended each pre-application open house indicated their support for the rental housing project (53% for Alice Saunders, 69% for Edward Byers/Loyal Orange)
- Prioritization of community spaces in the building designs featured most prominently in feedback on both redevelopments
Comments and feedback collected vis-a-vis the community engagement process will be used to help Brightside ensure the redevelopment is the best fit for both the community and for residents as Brightside strives to increase the number of safe and secure affordable homes for those struggling to meet the demands of market housing.
