2924 Venables Street

2924 Venables Street is located in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood. Our proposal is to replace the existing 64 units with 146 new units of affordable, secured rental housing for independent-living seniors, families, and people with disabilities.  

Brightside has provided affordable housing for seniors at 2924 Venables Street since 1977. With your support, Brightside will be able to provide many more homes for seniors while adding much-needed new homes for families in Hastings-Sunrise. 

The project is also pursuing Passive House certification. Passive House is a standard for energy efficiency and yields a reduced carbon footprint. It results in ultra-low energy consumption buildings that require little energy for space heating and cooling. 

Although Brightside has taken steps to maintain the building at a high standard, the property is aging and does not offer accessibility features such as an elevator, often required for seniors aging in place. It’s imperative to us at Brightside that the homes we provide and the communities we foster meet the needs of our residents in the long-term. After many renovations and upgrades to the building, we at Brightside have decided to redevelop 2924 Venables Street to better meet the needs of our residents.

As well as improving homes for residents of 2924 Venables Street to allow them to age in place, Brightside is expanding the number of affordable homes on the site in an effort to support those who need affordable homes most, particularly seniors, families, and people with disabilities.


Brightside’s Rezoning Application for 2924 Venables Street was approved unanimously by Vancouver City Council on Dec. 2, 2020.

Why Sunrise Village?

All of Brightside’s residents, staff and Board, and select stakeholders had the opportunity to first provide thoughts and suggestions on possible names for the new buildings. The names were then shortlisted and put to a vote in the Brightside Community. The community chose the name Sunrise Village: East & West to represent the new buildings.

The word Sunrise reflects the new buildings’ location (i.e. in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood). The name conveys a sense of positivity and renewal, and a welcoming community. Its neutral and universal nature makes it popular and appropriate for any who may live in the new buildings. The theme of sunrise was also extremely popular amongst those who participated in the naming of these buildings. The directions East and West represent the position of the two buildings on the site.

We are grateful to all of the Brightside residents, staff, and Board members that took place in our community engagement process, and are truly excited to see these new names adorn the entryways of our new buildings once complete.
