The Hawthorn offers 100 new affordable non-profit rental homes in Vancouver’s Marpole neighbourhood.
The new building, located at 8705 French Street (formerly 8725 French Street),* replaces Brightside’s previous property, MacLeod Manor. Brightside began the redevelopment of the property to replace the existing 46 units with 100 new units of affordable, secured rental homes for independent-living seniors, families, and people with disabilities. Located on Musqueam land near c̓əsnaʔəm, The Hawthorn also provides homes for Musqueam members through an MOU with Musqueam Indian Band.
Currently Brightside’s only building south of 49th Avenue, The Hawthorn provides much-needed affordable rental homes in a neighbourhood that consistently experiences critically low vacancy rates in affordable rental stock.
The Hawthorn is built to Passive House Certification standards for energy efficiency and yields a significantly reduced carbon footprint. Passive House construction means The Hawthorn is an ultra-low energy consumption building that requires very little energy for space heating and cooling.
