Held on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at the Hastings Community Centre Auditorium from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Brightside is one of the City’s largest and longest-standing housing societies, owning and managing 26 properties providing homes for over 1,000 residents. Brightside is proposing to redevelop Alice Saunders House to ensure we’re able to meet the needs of current and future residents in the long-term. Although Brightside has taken steps to maintain the property at a high standard, it is aging and does not offer accessibility features such as an elevator, often required for seniors aging in place. It also does not have modern fire safety systems.
Constructed in 1977, Alice Saunders House is located 2924 Venables, in the Hastings Sunrise neighbourhood. It is a low-rise wood-framed building with a total of 64 homes. All current residents are seniors, and our priority is to minimize the impact on them in the run-up to, and during, the redevelopment of the site. Brightside is going above and beyond the City’s new relocation requirements when supporting our residents during the temporary relocation period. All current residents will be welcomed back at their current rents once the new development is complete.
There are 34,575 residents living in Hastings Sunrise; 18.8% live in low-income households, and 12% are low income seniors. Our plan is in line with City and provincial housing strategies, helping add desperately needed affordable rental suites in Vancouver for seniors and families.
This open house represented the first of many opportunities to learn more and provide your feedback about the proposed redevelopment of Alice Saunders House. Your support through the City’s process by providing feedback through the comment cards provided at the open house and online is critical to ensuring that we are able to get to the next phase in the City process and meet the needs of current and future residents for the long-term. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
