Brightside Community Homes Foundation (“Brightside”) is a private-sector, non-profit organization that owns and manages 26 buildings across the city of Vancouver, providing affordable homes to those who struggle to meet the demands of market housing. OPPORTUNITY

Brightside is currently seeking to fill a full-time, permanent position on our Field Operations team in the role of Plumber & Mobile Field Technician. This busy and challenging role will be responsible for servicing our portfolio of 26 multi-unit residential properties located in Metro Vancouver. This position will report directly to the Director, Property Services.

 

MAIN AREAS OF FOCUS

  • To provide plumbing-related installation, service repairs, and maintenance for Brightside’s multi-unit residential properties.
  • To conduct monthly visits to all properties to prevent and check for leaks and overall functioning of mechanical equipment.
  • To provide exceptional customer service to our resident community.
  • To ensure general upkeep of assigned portfolio of properties and report any larger repair and/or maintenance issues.
  • To ensure compliance with building codes and safety standards.

 

KEY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct in-suite plumbing repairs, maintenance, and upgrades in a timely fashion;
  • Troubleshoot and perform repairs to mechanical system as required;
  • Serve as the first point of contact for plumbing/mechanical emergencies;
  • Report repairs to the Field Manager that require mechanical contractor(s);
  • Collaborate with general contractors and other trades/professionals, as needed;
  • Ensure compliance with the Residential Tenancy Act at all times and particularly when providing notice and/or gaining access to units;
  • Assemble and install pipes and tubes with attention to existing infrastructure;
  • Assist pipefitters in the layout, assembly, and installation of plumbing, heating, and gas systems, as required;
  • Address deficiencies found during mechanical inspections;
  • Replace equipment (such as hot water tanks), as directed;
  • Select and oversee the procurement of construction materials and equipment;
  • Complete general repairs to common areas, including building exterior, as required;
  • Conduct basic electrical and appliance repairs (eg. stoves, fridges, range hoods);
  • Complete drywall patching and/or repairs, interior/exterior door repairs, and/or lock maintenance;
  • Clearly communicate (and follow up) with residents regarding work-in-progress;
  • Report and record pre-and-post maintenance jobs by taking photos and submitting to office staff, as required;
  • Take due care to not damage or soil property when conducting in-suite work;
  • Tidy up work area upon completion;
  • Assist with salting and clearing snow, as required;
  • Assist fellow Mobile Field Technicians with duties, as required; and
  • Other duties, as assigned by the Manager, Operations & Maintenance.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Must possess valid plumbing license; third-year or greater/equivalent;
  • Diploma from a trade school or successful completion of apprenticeship;
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience troubleshooting and conducting plumbing repairs and installations;
  • Knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and safety practices;
  • Skilled in the use of hand and power tools used in the plumbing trade;
  • Solid understanding of water distribution and disposal systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings;
  • Ability to read and interpret building drawings/blueprints;
  • Ability to complete projects unsupervised and unassisted;
  • Must possess valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record;
  • Ability to use and navigate technology including smart phones (making calls, sending/receiving texts, taking/sending photos, etc.) and Microsoft Office suite;

  • Resident and service-focused: Exceptional commitment to delivering the highest levels of customer service to our residents; and
  • Good written and oral communication skills: Including the ability to communicate effectively and inclusively with a variety of individuals in a professional and sensitive manner, while also maintaining the highest levels of confidentiality.
  • Additional skills/training such as a gas ticket, cross-connection, pump truck operation, etc. would be considered assets.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Field Office: Our Field Office is located on the Parkade level of 2950 Euclid Avenue, Vancouver. Each workday, Field team members meet at the Field Office for the morning briefing, to collect assignments, tools, and/or work vehicles, and return at the end of the workday.

Hours of Work: The Field team’s typical hours of work will be 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Thursday, and 8:00 am to 2:30 pm on Fridays, with a 30-minute daily lunch break. Brightside may require some flexibility in scheduling to address deadlines and other issues. The Field team may be required, on occasion, to work outside the typical hours of work. Overtime must be authorized in writing, in advance, and signed off by their manager within 24 hours unless associated with being “on-call”. The members of the Field team are expected to participate as part of the “on-call” rotation one weekend per month. The Plumber on staff is the first point of contact for all plumbing issues including after-hours callouts (24/7). A monthly on-call allowance is provided to each Field team member, in addition to overtime pay.

Compensation: Brightside is proud to be a certified Living Wage employer. Expected salary range for this position: $74,000-$82,000/year (to commensurate with experience). A competitive extended health, dental, and vision package is provided to qualified employees upon hiring. An employer matching RRSP program is offered after three (3) months of successful employment.
