8725 French Street

8725 French Street is located in Vancouver’s Marpole neighbourhood. Brightside is proposing a redevelopment of the property that would replace the existing 46 units with 100 new units of affordable, secured rental homes for independent-living seniors, families, and adults with disabilities.

Brightside acquired the property at 8725 French Street in 2013 with the intention of increasing affordability for renters in South Vancouver. Currently Brightside’s only building south of 49th Avenue, your support for this redevelopment will help us increase the number of affordable rental homes Brightside is able to provide in a neighbourhood that consistently experiences critically low vacancy rates in affordable rental stock.

This project is also pursuing Passive House Certification. Passive House is a standard for energy efficiency and yields a reduced carbon footprint. It results in ultra-low energy consumption buildings that require little energy for space heating and cooling.

Although Brightside has taken steps to maintain the building at a high standard, the property is aging and does not offer sufficient accessibility features required for seniors aging in place. It’s important to us at Brightside that the homes we provide and the communities we foster meet the needs of our residents in the long-term.

As well as improving homes for residents of 8725 French Street to allow them to age in place, Brightside is expanding the number of affordable homes on the site in an effort to support those who need affordable homes most, particularly seniors, families, and people with disabilities.

Brightside’s rezoning application for 8725 French Street was approved on June 15, 2021. Another unanimous vote from Vancouver City Council.
