Building Service Worker

Full-Time, 14-month Contract (with possibility for extension)

Brightside Community Homes Foundation (“Brightside”) is a private-sector, non-profit organization that owns and manages 26 buildings across the city of Vancouver, providing affordable housing to those who struggle to meet the demands of market housing. In addition to property management, Brightside is committed to building connections within the Brightside communities that include over 1000 residents.

 

OPPORTUNITY

Brightside is currently seeking to fill a full-time, 14-month term contract position on our Operations team in the role of the Building Service Worker, reporting to the Director of Operations under the supervision of the Field Manager. The purpose of this position is to work closely with the Building Manager at our Collingwood Tower property (located at 5657 Harold Street, Vancouver) which will undergo an $8.2M full-building envelope remediation, in partnership with BC Housing. During this extensive upgrade, the Building Service Worker (together with the Building Manager) will be responsible for a variety of on-site duties such as providing secure, authorized access to the building, individual suites and maintenance areas, while also providing exceptional, person-centred, customer service to our Brightside community of residents.

 

MAIN AREAS OF FOCUS

  • Serve as an on-site liaison between Brightside residents, third-party contractors and service providers;
  • Provide secure, authorized access to buildings and/or suites to third-party contractors and service providers;
  • Respond to and address emerging on-site matters and issues;
  • Post and/or deliver paper notices in the building and/or individual suites; and
  • Assist/Coordinate scheduling of third-party contractors and services providers, as required.

 

KEY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Post building notices and/or deliver resident-specific correspondence;
  • Provide resident-centred, courteous and respectful customer service to Brightside residents, third-party contractors and service providers;
  • Provide third party contractor management and ensure approved work is completed as per scope of work;
  • Provide access for pest control treatments, as required;
  • Undertake basic repairs and replacements related to building fixtures, lighting, door/window security and appliances, as required;
  • Provide installation of minor signage using glue, tape and basic hand tools, and complete ad-hoc work orders as assigned to you by the Building Manager or Field Manager;
  • Report equipment and/or areas requiring attention or repairs, including fire and security hazards, to the Field Manager; and
  • Eliminate safety hazards, where safely possible, and set-up safety barriers.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English – written and verbally
  • Ability to also communicate effectively in Cantonese would be an asset
  • Minimum of one to two (1-2) years’ experience in construction, maintenance, and/or property management
  • Previous experience working with vulnerable populations would be preferred
  • A team player with solid interpersonal skills, committed to building relationships and delivering excellent customer service
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement
  • Must be reasonably, physically fit and able to climb stairs, as needed
  • Proven time management, organization and problem-solving skills
  • Adaptable, strong attention to detail, with basic handyman/handywoman skills
  • Ability to effectively navigate and use a smart phone (for calling, emailing, taking and sending pictures, texting, etc.)

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • This opportunity is a 14-month term contract with the possibility of extension and/or a permanent position for the right incumbent.
  • This position may require schedule flexibility in order to accommodate third-party contractors and service providers; the incumbent will be paid an hourly wage.
